Feeling Lost or Not Like Yourself? You Might Be in an Identity Shift
Full Moon 11June 2025, prompting us to identify who we are and what we want from life
A topic that has been popping up a lot lately are identity shifts.
I think maybe this started with my younger one hitting the double digits last month and things really changing for both my children, but it has also come up a lot in conversations with clients, in our stress management workshop and with friends.
It is very fitting, given this full moon is in Sagittarius and naturally prompts us to broaden our horizons and create the momentum needed to become aware of our true nature, desires and to follow our unique purpose.
This had me inspired to write a blog on the topic and explain in simple terms what identity shifts are, how they might be showing up for you, how to notice if you're going through one (or feeling stuck in it), and how you can use it to support your growth.
So what are identity shifts?
Put really simply, the changes you might notice in yourself during an identity shift are:
A change in how we view ourselves
A change in how we relate within our world
A shift in our priorities and values.
Identity shifts are often difficult times in life, usually sparked by some external change. You might have experienced one during moments like
Becoming a parent
Getting married/divorced
Change in careers
Going through puberty/menopause
A loss
Moving countries or cities
Burnout
Success
Sometimes however these shifts can happen only within us and aren’t necessarily tied to a change in external circumstances.
Some signs you might be in the middle of an identity shift include:
Feeling disconnected from self; don’t feel “like yourself“ anymore
Not experiencing joy or having difficulty knowing what brings us joy
Roles no longer fit
Longing for change but unsure how or what
Friendships feel unaligned
You are craving alone time and space
One thing I noticed is that an identity shift is a time that can go one in two ways:
The perfect time to finetune who you are, become really self aware and honor your purpose, take full control of your life
A time where you lose yourself and oftentimes get “stuck”
Your identity is your internal compass, when your identity shifts, you (your internal world and subconscious) have to shift with it to stay in alignment.
It’s a powerful opportunity to grow into your true self.
But without awareness, it can also leave you feeling stuck or lost.
Knowing this can be oh so powerful; oftentimes when we go through these painful shifts (not always painful, but let’s face it they often are) we can feel resentful and adopt a “why me” attitude, but if we flip the script and welcome these changes with open arms, with a curiosity for self, with an understanding that this can be a time for immense growth it feels delicious and inviting - would you agree?
So how can we use this time to consciously reconnect with our true self and find out what our purpose is?
Here are some tools for you to utilize if you feel like you might be going through a shift:
Give yourself space - really start listening to your internal world. (You need to unplug to do this)
This will help digest the NEW and connect with yourself
Allow yourself to grieve the loss of the old version of yourself (even if your shift “ should be ”a happy one i.e. birth of a baby)
Journal on: who you are becoming and what you are calling in for your life now (you are allowed to be excited!)
Reach out for help especially if you feel lost or things feel heavy. Needing help doesn’t make you weak. It makes you wise.
Can you relate to any of this?
