Simple Mindfulness Practices for Everyday Life (That Actually Work)

Full moon 13. May 2025 in Scorpio - motivating personal change

A topic we discussed at our first session of the workshop series Recharge your body and mind is mindfulness.

There was a time in my life when I became pretty disconnected from myself, my self-reflection and mindful living.

This was around the time of the birth of my first baby Noah, and I remember my mum telling me - “slow down, you are so fast with everything you do!”

At the time I was thinking - yes, but I have to be, there are a million things that need doing, thinking about, taking care of and simply put, not enough time in the day to do so.

The moment this thought loop and way of living was interrupted for me is still crystal clear in my mind. It was the first Yoga class I attended after having baby number two - Evangelina.

I was an exhausted Mama that temporarily forgot what the difference between a race to the finish line and a mindful way of living was.

I think I slowly found my way home to myself again with that experience and weekly reminder of mindfulness through my Yoga practice.

In this blog, I want to explore mindfulness and what it really means. I’ll share simple ways to practice it in daily life without sacrificing the time you need to get things done, because that’s the key point.

Mindfulness or mindful living does not mean you need to dedicate 30min a day to meditation (even though I applaud everyone that manages to do so) and you don’t need to slow all the things down in your life.

The Oxford dictionary explains mindfulness as “the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.”

Mindfulness means to stay present in the moment, it means to connect your own energy with that of your surroundings, it means to be aware of your emotions and your physical needs.

It sounds extremely simple, because it is, yet it is strangely difficult for many of us to practice.

The biggest reason I think is that we become extremely distracted by our world of thought. Always being one step ahead of ourselves. Never really enjoying the present moment.

It also means that by doing so we never really take note of what our bodies are telling us.

I would love for you to check in with yourself - are you living mindfully?

Ask yourself:

When was the last time you truly noticed you needed a break.

Maybe you did, but did you override it because something else was more important?

When was the last time you could experience pure joy and felt truly present in a moment, without distraction or thinking about what comes next?

If these two questions are difficult for you to answer, don’t worry there are two simple things you can do to start getting into practicing mindfulness:

1. Mindful Transitions

Use moments between tasks—like making tea or walking to your car—to take three deep breaths and mentally check in with your body and emotions. Just pay attention to what is going on, judgement free.

2. The "One-Thing" Focus

Choose one activity each day to do without multitasking—e.g., drinking coffee without checking your phone. Just one thing, it won’t take a lot of time, but it can be pretty powerful for your mind, body and soul.

Mindfulness doesn’t take away the busy—it just helps you meet it with more clarity, compassion, and energy.

When you make these small, mindful choices—like focusing on one task or checking in with your body —you’re setting yourself up for a calmer, clearer mind and a more energized body.

Because when we practice mindfulness, we not only reconnect emotionally with ourselves but also support our body’s well-being. Mindfulness calms the mind, which in turn activates the parasympathetic nervous system, putting us in ‘rest and digest’ mode—vital for our health, our organs, and even our ability to think clearly. So, mindfulness isn't just a tool for emotional balance—it helps us feel better physically, too.

I invite you to pick one thing you can easily implement into your busy life right now, to start practicing mindfulness.

Which one will it be for you?

I would love to hear from you,

Much love

Marisa
