The Mind-Body Connection & Why It Matters

Kia Ora everyone,
I am currently still away on leave but just about to come back to the real world.
Before I went on holiday I had a deep reflective morning walk one day that had me explore the importance of our mind - body connection and how that ties in with our healing.
I often talk about body and mind connection and even in my retreat offerings that is something I speak to because it is truly so important when it comes to healing and wellbeing.
A current trend in the coaching and wellness industry is nervous system work for healing of trauma. And it is huge!
And right so! Our nervous system is essentially our feelers, it shapes how we experience the world day to day, and it deeply influences our behaviour, mood, and how we relate to others.
But one piece that I think is often overlooked is that our brain is a huge part of our nervous system. So while we might be doing all the nervous system healing - the cold plunges, the breathwork, the trauma informed movement and so on, we cannot forget to incorporate all of that by integrating the mind as well.
That’s where the talking, the reflecting, the meditation and the coaching come in.
The Importance of Mind-Body Connection
So why am I going on about nervous system work? It really is to start thinking about our mind-body connection.
I think we have been alienated from listening to our bodies and that is something we will need to relearn.
We all know those sentences too well - “work before pleasure”, “you can sleep when you are dead”, “don’t waste your food, finish your plate” and the list goes on. And what have these sentences, that I am sure were meant well at the time, taught us?
They taught us to push through, to ignore what our bodies signals are in terms of rest, boundaries, food intake and so much more. So the mind-body connection has been overridden by social conditioning.
With today’s post I invite you to tune into your body and mind connection, just notice if you are listening to your physical being or are you one that tends to push through instead?
